Carol Mountford's love of fashion started at an early age and her first commercial endeavour involved hand painting tee shirts and selling them at the iconic Cook St Markets in Auckland. After several other successful businesses she opened the first Wallis store in her hometown of Devonport in 1989.

Wallis is now a true family business with Carol's husband Dave joining the team in 1994 when the Mt Eden store was opened, and their daughter Anna joined at the end of 2000. For Anna it was more like a homecoming as she spent all her high school and university weekends and holidays working at Wallis. Thankfully her hours spent being dragged around fabric warehouses and viewing ranges with her mum finally paid off. The Tauranga store opened in 2002, the same year Anna launched her own mountford label.

All the stores have a different feel and often stock different pieces. Wallis manufacture every week of the year and regular customers know to pop in often so they don't miss out on anything. Their New Zealand made garments are exclusive to the Wallis stores so you can always find something a bit different, of excellent quality.
